ScholarshipsThe Writers' League of Texas has awarded three scholarships
to aspiring journalists and writers at three Texas universities. The awards
are issued annually by the League's Bess Whitehead Scott scholarship committee,
which was named for one of the state's pioneering women journalists. Scott, who
lived to be 107, wrote a book late in life about her career in newspaper reporting,
teaching and advertising. She died in 1997. Scholarships of $1,000 each
have been awarded to the following:

| David Saleh Rauf of Texas
State University was tapped for the Bess Whitehead Scott Journalism Scholarship.
The 26-year-old lives in San Marcos and is studying for a journalism degree with
a specialty in electronic media. Rauf has worked on campus for the University
Star newspaper and radio station KTSW-FM. | Tramese Darcell Andrews,
20, of Baylor University is the recipient of the Felton West Journalism Scholarship,
which is named for a long-time Houston Post reporter and editor. Andrews' hometown
is Garland. This spring, she was an intern in Baylor's media relations department. | Nereida
Reyes, 70, of San Antonio was selected for the Scott Scribes Scholarship
for Older Adults (40 and older). When awarded her associate's degree from St.
Philip's College in San Antonio in 2001, Reyes' student graduation speech was
picked up by National Public Radio. She received a bachelor of arts from the University
of Texas at San Antonio in 2005. Her goal is to obtain a master's degree so she
can teach literature and creative writing at the college level. | The
Bess Whitehead Scott Journalism Scholarship was established to honor Scott, an
Austin resident during her retirement. One of her many accomplishments was encouraging
a young student, Felton West, to enter the newspaper business in the 1940s. He
worked for The Houston Post for 53 years. West died in 2005 after
