31, 2009 Good things are happening to both 2009 Bess Whitehead Scott
scholarship winners. The $1,500 scholarships are administered by the Writers'
League of Texas. Philip Perez, 40, the winner of the Scott Scribes Scholarship
for Adults Ages 40 or Over, has been named editor-in-chief of the Foghorn, Del
Mar College's student publication. Perez also is the founder and president of
the Diversity Awareness Organization, working both at the college and in the community
of Corpus Christi. His major is Journalism and Radio/Television. Erika Pedroza,
21, winner of the Bess Whitehead Scott Journalism Scholarship, will use her award
to help underwrite the Fall 2009 Baylor in New York program. Pedroza will study
film and digital media in the Big Apple, returning to Baylor University in Waco
for her last term and then graduation in May 2010. Guidelines and Applications

The deadline is February 5, 2010. The Journalism award is granted annually to
a junior or senior university student pursuing a degree in journalism or a related
field. The Scott Scribes award is granted annually to a woman or man age 40 or
over pursuing study or a degree in journalism, writing or a related field. For

League volunteers spent over 300 hours wrapping gifts in December 2008, earning
$3,145 for the Bess Whitehead Scott Scholarship Fund. MARTHA MILLER coordinated
the project for the fifth year in a row, and scheduled wrappers who worked at
five bookstores: the Arboretum, Westlake and Sunset Valley Barnes & Noble;
Book People and Borders (Domain) bookstores in Austin. A huge gold star
for wrapping the most hours was shared by KEN LOVELESS, who worked six shifts,
and CAMILLE NERADA, who did four. Volunteers with names in all capitals below
(21 total) worked two shifts or more.
