When we say that the writing is what counts, we mean it. But it’s important to keep in mind that there are things outside of writing that can help you on this journey. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to intern with a literary agent. It was my job to read manuscripts and provide critiques, but I was also tasked with research. I reported back on things like a writer’s social media presence, memberships or groups they were a part of, whether they worked with books and readers in other capacities, and anything else that might have been relevant.
While these things never overshadowed the craft itself, we had to consider a writer’s platform because it can make a huge difference when it comes to marketing books and connecting with readers. The problem is that building a platform is no easy feat.
