Letters from the Program Director: Fictionalize Your Life!

Hello writers,

There are profound moments in all of our lives that could make for a good story. For some, that means taking those experiences and turning them into nonfiction pieces, but for others, nonfiction isn’t quite the right fit. Naturally, the next step would be to try to fictionalize these experiences, but if you’re fictionalizing a true story, there is a lot to consider. How do you take something that really happened and make it compelling for readers? And how do you free yourself from the constraints of the “truth” of what happened? The questions could go on and on!

Luckily, Nan Cuba is ready to answer these questions and more. That’s why we’re excited to offer the class “The Truth Told Slant: Personal Experience Turned into Fiction” with her on Saturday, June 4th. If you have a personal experience you’d like to adapt to fiction or you can’t decide whether that’s the route you’d like to take, this class is for you.

All the best,
Sam Babiak
Program Director
