This presentation will guide authors through the agent’s experience sorting through their query inbox in order to better help them understand the things that persuade and dissuade an agent from spending time with an author’s query and sample pages. James Mustelier will discuss everything from fonts and formatting to opening pages and everything in between. In order to help authors stand out from the thousands of other queries an agent receives on a monthly basis, this presentation will focus both on removing impediments and emphasizing strengths to grab and hold an agent’s attention.
The presentation will be followed by a moderated conversation and an audience Q&A. For the conversation, our presenter James Mustelier of The Bent Agency will be joined by WLT Program Director Sarah Renee Beach.
Do you have burning questions about standing out in the querying process that you want to make sure we answer? You can share them with us ahead of the event via this form and then tune in for the live webinar on Saturday, April 26 where all will be revealed. The deadline to submit your questions is Thursday, April 24 at 5:00 PM CT (questions will also be accepted via the Q&A box during the event).
Registration for this presentation will close on Friday, April 25 at 5:00 PM CDT.
This presentation will be recorded and made available to participants until January 31, 2026.

James Mustelier is looking for a range of commercial and literary fiction and non-fiction. Across genres he prizes economical prose, complex characters, steadily building tension, narrative gravity, and the momentary relief of dark humor, even amid dire circumstances. In commercial fiction, he's looking for compact horror and mysteries with unique hooks and intricate plotting. In sci-fi and fantasy, he's drawn to stories that are grounded in reality and have high stakes that touch on contemporary issues — much more speculative fiction and alternate histories than space opera or high fantasy. In nonfiction, he's looking for books that give him a vivid look into subcultures and events he might not otherwise have had the chance to explore. Much of his favorite nonfiction melds a distinct narrative voice with rigorous research.
