Voice is the Loch Ness Monster of the literary world—a nebulous, evasive entity that nobody can describe perfectly, yet we know it when we see it. Publishers want it, reviewers swoon over it, but how do we use voice effectively if its very definition eludes us? In this class, students will explore the concept of voice in popular literature. Learn the three cornerstones of voice and how to apply them immediately to your work in progress. Identify the unique voice elements like syntax and diction that already exist in your writing and utilize them strategically. Dive into diction and dialogue to make a story uniquely yours. Work with humor as a voice technique for connecting with the reader.
TAKE THIS CLASS IF
- Prospective agents repeatedly say that your story is “great” but they “can’t connect with the main character or narrator.”
- You want to elevate traditional genre fiction beyond the norm, or your literary fiction needs a kick in the pants.
- You’re a writer who appreciates craft and wants to play with words on a granular level.
The deadline to register for this class has been extended to Saturday, May 1, at 8 a.m. CDT. If you have any trouble registering, contact us at becka@writersleague.org.
