Let’s dive into crafting the most frightening thrills and chills on the page.
As Austin’s favorite author and filmmaker Owen Egerton likes to say, a horror movie is any movie that makes the viewer feel unsafe—typically because the rules of the natural order have been inverted and we don’t know what’s going to happen next! In this class, we’ll study three horror films representing three popular horror subgenres (haunted houses, haunted bodies, and haunted babies) and the books they were based on to understand the primary elements of horror writing. How do you build suspense/tension in a paragraph? What does a cinematic jump scare look like on the page? How can we mime our own nightmares for stories?
