Humor isn’t just for comedies; the most memorable stories often use humor at opportune moments in the narrative.

Humor can deepen character relationships, both soften and enhance emotionally charged scenes, and make a story more enjoyable. But forced humor is humor that falls flat. So how do you add humor in a way that feels natural to your voice and story?

In this class, we’ll explore types of humor, techniques for making readers laugh (without relying on “easy” or flat humor), and how to balance humor with heavier themes. Students will discover tips and techniques for incorporating humor into stories in ways that will deepen their emotional impact and will gain confidence in using humor as a storytelling tool, not a gimmick. Come ready to (re)discover the power of levity in your storytelling.

TAKE THIS CLASS IF:

  • You’re writing a novel or short story for readers of all ages.
  • You’d like to learn some simple techniques for deepening the emotional impact of your stories.
  • You’ve always wanted to know how to make your stories a little bit funnier.
  • You don’t think you’re funny at all but are hoping it’s something you can be taught (it is).

The deadline to register for this class is Friday, September 19 at 5:00 PM CDT.

Can’t make it to the live class? No problem! All classes are recorded and made available to students until January 31, 2026.

Instructor

Rachel Toalson writes books. Lots of them. For everyone—kids, teens, adults, fiction lovers, poetry lovers, essay lovers. People who adore realistic stories or magical realism or fantasy or tales that keep them up at night or make them laugh out loud. Most of her stories examine the intersection of neurodivergence, trauma, feminism, and mental illness and feature characters who challenge societal norms and shatter misconceptions. Her books have received awards, been Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selections, and are studied as curriculum in English classes. She loves running, reading, writing, and drinking peppermint green tea in her home in San Antonio, TX, where she lives with her one extraordinary husband, six brilliant kids, and two arrogant cats.
