WLT hosts On the Craft of Writing talks a few times a year, partnering with an indie bookstore or other community organization, featuring authors discussing their craft in relation to their newest releases.

Join us for a conversation with several of the contributing authors — including editor and writer Britta Jensen, and writers Ishita Fernandes and E.A. Williams — about the process of writing their stories, exploring genre outside your comfort zone, editing a range of stories like this into a single collection, and ways you can learn to build your own “Mixed Bag of Tricks.”

Launching on November 18, the Mixed Bag of Tricks Anthology collects the stories of 11 different writers over a variety of tone and genre. This anthology started long before typical anthologies begin, at the creation phase. Each writer paired with another writer and challenged them with a prompt outside their typical wheelhouse, developing their own “Mixed Bag of Tricks”.

The Mixed Bag of Tricks Anthology can be pre-ordered here. Sixty percent of profits from the sale of this book will benefit the Writers’ League of Texas.

This conversation will be moderated by WLT Member Services Manager J Evan Parks.

RSVPs will close at 10:00 AM CST on Tuesday, November 14.

Featured Presenter(s)

Britta Jensen’s debut novel, Eloia Born, won the 2019 Writer’s League of Texas YA Discovery Prize and was long-listed for the Exeter Novel Prize. Subsequent publications include a sequel, Hirana’s War, as well as Ghosts of Yokosuka, her subversive retelling of Hamlet and Ophelia’s story, “Why Not Ophelia” in the Castle Anthology of Horror- Femme Fatales, and “Noise in the Woods” in Mixed Bag of Tricks. Her stories explore themes of persevering through disability, found family, and the intersection of love and various cultures on new worlds. For the past twenty years she has taught creative writing and edited books. Friends often refer to her as a polyglot—which is a product of living twenty-two years overseas in Japan, South Korea, and Germany before settling in Austin, Texas with her awesome capoerista husband. She enjoys mentoring writers and editing books with The Writing Consultancy and Yellowbird Editors.
Ishita Fernandes lives in North London, England. She creates near-future thrillers focused on the dark side of technology, science and the impact on society. With over twenty years working in executive positions across some of the largest technology and consulting organisations, she draws upon her experiences as inspiration, to create an immersive read. Ishita completed the Faber and Faber “Writing a Novel” course in 2020. Her first short story “Static Road” has been published as part of the “Mixed Bag of Tricks” anthology and represents her sharp, dark and visceral fiction. She is currently working on her debut novel.
E.A. Williams is a graduate of the University of North Texas where she studied film and playwriting. While completing her degree, she stretched her creative limits helping to run a writer’s collective, as well as studying special effects. Her love for the fantastical can be seen in her thrilling debut series The Line of Tepes, which invites readers to explore Williams’ hometown of Houston through the lens of a sexy vampire noir.
