One Page Salon

The One Page Salon (called “the best literary evening in town” by the Austin American-Statesman) is a monthly reading series presented by the Writers’ League of Texas. 

Join us for our first One Page Salon of 2024 (that’s right… we’re back!). Five outstanding writers will read one page from a work in progress – including Joe Brundidge, Andrew Hilbert, Hillery Hugg, Cynthia Leitich Smith, and Stephanie Macias – which means the audience will be among the first to hear new material from our talented line-up. Plus, there will be literary chit chat and fun & games and laughter and so much more.

The One Page Salon takes place on the lovely outdoor patio (weather permitting) at Radio Coffee & Beer in South Austin where attendees can enjoy coffee and beer and other libations. There are some tasty food trucks if you want to pick up a bite to eat and Reverie Books will be on hand selling an assortment of great reads, including our readers’ latest books. Your host for the evening will be WLT Executive Director Becka Oliver. 

Featured Presenter(s)

Joe Brundidge is an author, host, teaching artist and public speaker living in Austin, Texas. He has hosted poetry events for 25 years, and served as the Director of the Austin International Poetry Festival from 2012-2015
Andrew Hilbert is the author of XCRMNTMNTN, Inner Space, Invasion of the Weirdos, Bangface & the Gloryhole, and Death Thing. He lives in Texas.
Hillery Hugg is a writer and museum editor based in Austin, Texas. She received an MA in English Literature from UT Austin, where she was also a Michener Fellow, and she is a graduate of the MFA program at Columbia University. Her stories have appeared in American Short Fiction, 3rd Bed, The American Reader, Caketrain, NANO Fiction, The Lifted Brow, and The Vassar Review, and her non-fiction has been published in Guernica and The Believer. She's currently at work on a novel.
Cynthia Leitich Smith (Muscogee citizen) is an acclaimed, New York Times bestselling author, the 2024 Southern Mississippi Medallion Winner, and the 2021 NSK Neustadt Laureate. Reading Rockets named her to its list of 100 Children’s Authors and Illustrators Everyone Should Know. Her titles include HEART UNBROKEN, winner of an American Indian Youth Literature Award; the anthology ANCESTOR APPROVED: INTERTRIBAL STORIES FOR KIDS, which was an ALA Notable Book and winner of the Reading of the West Book Award; an Indigenous PETER PAN retelling titled SISTERS OF THE NEVERSEA, which received six starred reviews; and the YA ghost mystery HARVEST HOUSE, which Publishers Weekly, in a starred review, called “a spine-tingling, edge-of-the-seat chiller.” Her 2024 middle grade releases are MISSION ONE: THE VICE PRINCIPAL PROBLEM (BLUE STARS #1), a Junior Library Guild selection, also by Kekla Magoon and Molly Murakami and a road-trip novel titled ON A WING AND A TEAR. Cynthia is also the author-curator of Heartdrum, a Native-focused imprint of HarperCollins, and was the inaugural Katherine Paterson Chair at the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA program.
Stephanie Macias is a Latinx writer, artist, and musician living in Austin, TX. She received an MFA in fiction from the University of Texas at Austin and has received support from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference and Vermont Studio Center. Her stories have been shortlisted for The Masters Review Best Emerging Writers anthology, a finalist for the Jesmyn Ward Prize, longlisted for the DISQUIET Prize, and nominated for Best of the Net and the Pushcart Prize four times. Her work has appeared in StoryQuarterly, Brink, No Tokens, Southern Humanities Review, Crazyhorse, and more. She is the managing editor at American Short Fiction.

Class & Event Registration Policy

Once a purchase has been made, registrations are not refundable and cannot be transferred to a different class or event. No exceptions will be made. If you purchase a registration and then find you cannot attend the class or event, someone else can attend in your stead. Simply contact us at wlt@writersleague.org and let us know the name and contact information for the person who will be using the registration so that we can update the class or event roster.

Anti-Harassment Policy

The Writers’ League of Texas is dedicated to providing harassment-free spaces for everyone, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, age, or religion. Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Sexual images not appropriate for the specific subject of the public discussion;
  • Deliberate intimidation or stalking;
  • Harassing photography or recording;
  • Sustained disruption of discussions or other events;
  • Unwelcome sexual attention;
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.

Enforcement
Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in harassing behavior, event organizers retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender or expulsion from the event with no refund. Event organizers may take action to redress anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants. We expect participants to follow these rules during all events and event-related social activities.

Reporting
If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible. Reports can also be made via email at wlt@writersleague.org. We’ll handle any and all reports as respectfully as possible. You won’t be asked to confront anyone, and we won’t tell anyone who you are.

Credit Card Transaction Handling Fee Policy
