PLEASE NOTE: While our One Page Salon reading series typically happens the first Tuesday of every month, this September, we’ll be gathering on the second Tuesday of the month!
The One Page Salon (called “the best literary evening in town” by the Austin American-Statesman) is a monthly reading series presented by the Writers’ League of Texas.
On Tuesday, September 8, join us for an extra special edition of the one-of-a-kind One Page Salon! It will be a night of revelry, literary fun, and exciting giveaways. Five outstanding writers—Claire Bowman, Casey Gerald, Hilal Isler, Katie Simon, and Sherry Thomas—will read one page from a work in progress or recently published work, which means the audience will be among the first to hear new material from our talented line-up. Come to laugh, come to cry, come to find your community and maybe walk away with a special prize! Your host for the evening will be Becka Oliver.
The One Page Salon takes place on the lovely outdoor patio (weather permitting) at Radio Coffee & Beer in South Austin where attendees can enjoy coffee and beer and other libations. There are some food trucks if you want to pick up a tasty bite to eat and Reverie Books will be on hand selling an assortment of great reads, including our readers’ latest books.

Claire Bowman (she/they) is a writer, editor, and the author of Dear Creatures. Her poetry has been published in Narrative Magazine, PANK, Black Warrior Review, A Dozen Nothing, and elsewhere. As the Editor in Chief and co-Executive Director at Host Publications, Claire champions the work of poets from historically marginalized backgrounds, and through their empathetic, author-centered editorial approach, they work to bring each writer’s vision to its fullest expression. They received a fellowship from the Michener Center for Writers, and have recently earned certificates in Grant Writing, Fiduciary Excellence, and Nonprofit Financial Management from Nonprofit Austin. She co-hosts the podcast The Host Dispatch, and the long-standing feminist reading series, I Scream Social. Claire is a passionate advocate for Austin’s literary community. -
Casey Gerald is the author of There Will Be No Miracles Here, a memoir that was named a Best Book of 2018 by NPR and The New York Times, a finalist for the LAMBDA Literary Award, a longlist selection for the Carnegie Medal for excellence in Nonfiction among others. Gerald’s essays include “The Black Art of Escape,” published in New York Magazine and selected by Longform as one of the best essays of 2019; and “Leon Bridges After Dark,” a Texas Monthly cover profile that won the 2022 National City & Regional Magazine Award. Prior to his writing career, Gerald co-founded and served as CEO of MBAs Across America (MBAx), his TED Talks have been viewed over 4 million times, and he opened for President Barack Obama at SXSW in 2016. A native of Oak Cliff, Texas, Gerald attended Dallas Public Schools before college at Yale, where he played varsity football and co-founded the Yale Black Men's Union. He later received an MBA from Harvard Business School. Casey is a Senior Fellow of Humanity in Action, a Presidential Leadership Scholars Fellow, and a former Aspen Words Writer-in-Residence. He serves on the board of Kickstarter, PBC. He is a New America fellow and resides in Waxahachie, Texas. -
Hilal Isler teaches at the University of Texas. Her short fiction and essays have appeared in McSweeney’s, New York Magazine, The Believer, The Baltimore Review, The Paris Review online, and elsewhere. She is a 2023 McKnight Fellow in Creative Prose and lives with her family in Austin. -
Katie Simon (they/them) is a sexuality and trauma journalist and author of the Kirkus star reviewed Tell Me What You Like: An Honest Discussion of Sex and Intimacy After Sexual Assault, which was featured in Oprah Daily, The Cut, Dan Savage, Amanda Knox, LARB, and NPR. Their writing has appeared in The New York Times, Vogue, Washington Post, Tin House, Playboy, and elsewhere. Simon is the 2026 Curatorial Scholar at the Kinsey Institute and is on the Austin Mayor's Committee for People with Disabilities. They have spoken to audiences at universities, bookstores, and sex shops across the US, and are launching Sex After Blank, a podcast about the unexpected formative experiences that affect how we have sex. -
USA Today-bestselling author Sherry Thomas decided years ago that her goal in life is to write every kind of story she enjoys reading. Thus far she has published romance, fantasy, mystery, young adult, and three books inspired by the martial arts epics she grew up devouring. Her works regularly receive starred reviews and best-of-the-year honors from trade publications, including such outlets as the New York Times and National Public Radio.
Her latest release, The Librarians, a contemporary mystery set in her neighborhood branch library in Austin, Texas, has been chosen as the Libby Award Best Mystery of 2026.
Sherry emigrated from China at age 13 and English is her second language.

Class & Event Registration Policy
Once a purchase has been made, registrations are not refundable and cannot be transferred to a different class or event. No exceptions will be made. If you purchase a registration and then find you cannot attend the class or event, someone else can attend in your stead. Simply contact us at wlt@writersleague.org and let us know the name and contact information for the person who will be using the registration so that we can update the class or event roster.

Anti-Harassment Policy
The Writers’ League of Texas is dedicated to providing harassment-free spaces for everyone, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, age, or religion. Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

- Sexual images not appropriate for the specific subject of the public discussion;
- Deliberate intimidation or stalking;
- Harassing photography or recording;
- Sustained disruption of discussions or other events;
- Unwelcome sexual attention;
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
Enforcement
Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in harassing behavior, event organizers retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender or expulsion from the event with no refund. Event organizers may take action to redress anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants. We expect participants to follow these rules during all events and event-related social activities.
Reporting
If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible. Reports can also be made via email at wlt@writersleague.org. We’ll handle any and all reports as respectfully as possible. You won’t be asked to confront anyone, and we won’t tell anyone who you are.
