Texas Writes in Cross Plains, TX

Texas Writes is a statewide program that brings accomplished authors to rural libraries for a half day of presentations and panel discussions focused on the craft of writing.

Our Cross Plains, TX event will feature Donna M. Johnson presenting “Deepening the Narrative: Moving Beyond the Personal in Memoir” and Maurice Chammah presenting “’We All Had Ponies!’: How to Interview Your Relatives and Write About Their Lives”.

We’ll start at 10:00 AM CDT with our presentations and we’ll conclude with a conversation with both authors, moderated by WLT Executive Director Becka Oliver.

Donna M. JohnsonDonna M. Johnson is the author of Holy Ghost Girl, a memoir critically acclaimed by the New York TimesO MagazineTexas Monthly, NPR’s Interfaith VoicesPeople and many other publications and blogs. Donna's work has been collected in two outstanding anthologies, Beyond Belief and Her Texas. She has written for The Rumpus, Psychology Today, The Nervous Breakdown, Shambhala Sun, Huffington Post, The Dallas Morning News and the Austin American Statesman. She is currently at work on a project that combines investigative journalism with personal narrative.
Maurice Chammah is an Austin-based journalist, author, and podcast host. His book, Let the Lord Sort Them: The Rise and Fall of the Death Penalty, won the 2021 Writers' League of Texas Nonfiction Book Award. He is working on a book about his father's Syrian-Jewish heritage.
