A few times a year, the WLT hosts WLT Off the Beaten Craft, a free presentation from an author who knows their stuff, focused on a genre, form, or topic that we don’t often get to talk about. These “Off the Beaten Craft” presentations are free and open to all.

About the event:

In this Off the Beaten Craft presentation, sensitivity reader Shenwei Chang will discuss the need for sensitivity readers when writing characters from marginalized communities. They’ll explain what exactly sensitivity readers do and what kinds of qualities are needed to be a good sensitivity reader and they’ll also discuss some best practices for seeking out sensitivity reading services.

Shenwei Chang headshotShenwei Chang is a Taiwanese American writer, blogger, and sensitivity reader. Their undergraduate background is in Asian American studies, and they are currently enrolled as a dual degree program graduate student studying children's literature and library and information science at Simmons University. They have been working as a freelance sensitivity reader since 2017, and their past clients include both Big 5 publishers and indie authors. They will most likely be found haunting their nearest bookstore.
