A few times a year, the WLT hosts Saturday Craft Seminars featuring a presentation and conversation with an author who has just released a book on the craft of writing. Everyone who buys a ticket will receive a signed copy of the book and access to the live event on Zoom.
This July, we can’t wait to dive into craft with two exciting WLT Saturday Craft Seminars. The first (on July 9th) will feature Melissa Febos and her craft book “Body Work” and the second (on July 30th) will feature Benjamin Percy and his book “Thrill Me.”
IMPORTANT: If you are registered for the 2022 Summer Writing Retreat, your registration includes access to both WLT Saturday Craft Seminars in July (plus the books). You do not need to register here for this event.
About the event:
Twenty pages, five to seven scenes. Splash pages, two-page spreads, gutters. A plots and B plots and C plots. Heroes and villains and love interests and sidekicks. Visual signatures. Panels and layouts. During this SMACK-BLAM-POW discussion, Benjamin Percy will touch on all of these craft devices and more – plus sharing his own writer journey and how the medium of comics has made him a better novelist, screenwriter, essayist, and short story writer.

Benjamin Percy is an award-winning, genre-bending novelist, comics writer and screenwriter.
His is the author of six novels -- most recently The Unfamiliar Garden (William Morrow) -- as well as The Ninth Metal, The Dark Net, The Dead Lands, Red Moon, and The Wilding. He has published three books of stories -- Suicide Woods, Refresh, Refresh, and The Language of Elk. He is also the author of a book of essays -- Thrill Me -- which is widely taught in creative writing classes.
He writes Wolverine, X-Force, and Ghost Rider for Marvel Comics. He has also written for DC Comics, AWA Studios, and Dynamite Entertainment and is known for his celebrated runs on Green Arrow, Devil's Highway, Teen Titans, Year Zero, Nightwing, and James Bond.
He has written three, ten-episode audio dramas for Marvel. Wolverine: The Long Night was listed as one of the top 15 podcasts of the year by Apple and won the iHeartRadio Award for best scripted podcasts. His latest series, Old Man Star-Lord, was listed by Entertainment Weekly as one of the Top Ten Podcasts of the year and stars Chris Elliot, Timothy Busfield, Vanessa Williams, and Danny Glover.
His fiction and nonfiction have been read on National Public Radio, performed at Symphony Space, and published by Esquire (where he was a contributing editor for a decade), GQ, Time, Men's Journal, Outside, the Wall Street Journal, the Paris Review, Tin House, Glimmer Train, Ploughshares, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Cemetery Dance, McSweeney's, and many other magazines and journals.
His honors include an NEA fellowship, the Whiting Writers' Award, the Plimpton Prize, two Pushcart Prizes, and inclusion in Best American Short Stories and Best American Comics.
He co-wrote the film Summering with the director James Ponsoldt, and it premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. He and Ponsoldt are currently collaborating on a TV adaptation of Urban Cowboy for Paramount+.

Once a purchase has been made, registrations are not refundable and cannot be transferred to a different class or event. No exceptions will be made. If you purchase a registration and then find you cannot attend the class or event, someone else can attend in your stead. Simply contact us at wlt@writersleague.org and let us know the name and contact information for the person who will be using the registration so that we can update the class or event roster.

Enforcement
Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in harassing behavior, event organizers retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender or expulsion from the event with no refund. Event organizers may take action to redress anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants. We expect participants to follow these rules during all events and event-related social activities.
Reporting
If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible. Reports can also be made via email at wlt@writersleague.org. We’ll handle any and all reports as respectfully as possible. You won’t be asked to confront anyone, and we won’t tell anyone who you are.
