Do you have family stories you’re aching to tell?
The holidays are around the corner. We may soon gather with our families, or at least think of them. As this time approaches, we will take a few hours to reflect and write about the very first cast of characters each of us was introduced to. We will think about our earliest memories, about the most vivid scenes we have preserved in our minds. And we will consider how familial relationships, never simple, might provide us with material for thoughtful, powerful, introspective essays. We will read and draw inspiration from short essays by noted writers like Anne Lamott and Jerald Walker. We will consider how singular, seemingly small moments may speak to something far larger, about ourselves and our society. During class, we will generate our own material based on prompts. You will leave the class with the beginnings of several essays.
