For any writer in any genre, nature is a presence in the narrative, whether as the central focus or ambient background.
Writing the natural world presents a tremendous opportunity, especially in our current moment, when we can all feel the ways in which the climate and the other life around us is changing, and the personal and collective anxiety about what’s coming is ever-present, if mostly on slow burn.
With a mix of short readings, exercises, and discussions, students will learn fresh perspectives on how to approach the presence of nature in their work, using new, fun tools to harness nature’s narrative and emotional power and better serve the unique voice of the work.
TAKE THIS CLASS IF:
- You’re writing about nature, climate or place.
- You’d like the natural world to be more present or alive in your work.
- You want to write the natural background of your stories in a way this isn’t boring or clichéd.
- You want fresh narrative tools to engage with climate crisis.
- You love nature writing but think it’s ready for a 21st century reboot.
The deadline to register for this class is Wednesday, November 5 at 5:00 PM CST.
Can’t make it to the live class? No problem! All classes are recorded and made available to students until January 31, 2026.

Christopher Brown is the author of A Natural History of Empty Lots, a “genre-defying work of nature writing, literary nonfiction, and memoir that explores what happens when nature and the city intersect,” the climate fiction novel Tropic of Kansas (a finalist for the 2018 John W. Campbell Award), Rule of Capture, Failed State (nominated for the 2021 Philip K. Dick Award), and the popular urban nature newsletter Field Notes. He lives in Austin with his family, in the edgeland woods between the river and the factories.
