Letters from the Program Director: Crafting Character

Hello, writers!

If you’re a lover of fiction, you can probably recall several characters who have stayed with you throughout your life. Personally, I feel deeply about most characters I get to know. I find myself frequently falling in love with romantic heroes or mourning for characters who have been lost and I think this is true for most readers. Whether we love them or not, we grow attached to the characters in the books we read. But to make this kind of response possible, writers first have to learn how to turn one-dimensional character ideas into fully-realized people on the page.

That’s why we’re excited to be offering the class Building Character: Creating Complex Personalities in Fiction” with Jennifer duBois on Saturday, November 19th. If you’re interested in creating more memorable and dynamic characterization, this class is for you.

All the best,
Sam Babiak
Program Director
