Hello, writers!
Have you ever read something that literally took your breath away? That had you sobbing into your sweater or even storming away from the book itself? You can probably name a few of these moments and that’s because these are the moments that stay with us long after we’ve placed a book back on our shelves. One of our jobs as writers is to make people feel something with our words and there are so many ways to do this, but at the end of the day, it’s all in the details.
I recently read a beautiful novel where the main character loses his mother. What made me cry was not the sentence that stated this, but in the moments that came after–the way the narrator’s breath hitched, the way he looked for his mom in places she would never be again. But whether or not you’re trying to make a reader cry, the point is that the details are what breathe life into your work and this is a skill that you can hone.
