Letters from the Program Director: Starting at the Top

Hello writers,

We put a lot of pressure on opening pages. Not only do you need your opening pages to capture your readers attention and make them want to keep reading, but if you’re querying agents or trying to get that “yes” for publication, opening pages are crucial in getting your manuscript to the next step in the process. But how do you know if your opening pages are doing the work they need to do? Well, the best way to understand the craft is by reading and studying the best openings out there.

That’s why we’re excited to be offering the class “Opening Pages in Fiction” with Antonio Ruiz-Camacho on Saturday, May 7. If you’re writing a novel or short stories and you want to learn what makes a memorable opening and how to accomplish it, this class is for you.

All the best,
Sam Babiak
Program Director
