Letters from the Program Director: Where to Begin…

Hello, writers!

In Mary Karr’s wonderful “The Art of Memoir” she writes “I’ve said it’s hard. Here’s how hard: everybody I know who wades deep enough into memory’s waters drowns a little.” I love this quote because it gets at the fact that when you have a lifetime of memories to work with, it can be overwhelming to try to create a narrative out of them. There are so many memories to choose from, so many threads you might expand on that, but how do you know which path will make for the most compelling and meaningful memoir? The answer is not easy to find and this initial obstacle keeps many writers from even attempting to write their stories. Luckily, memoirist Jessica Wilbanks is ready to help writers do just that.

That’s why we’re excited to be offering the class Memoir 101: Everything You Need to Know to (Finally) Start Your Memoir” with Jessica Wilbanks on Saturday, April 2. If you’re just getting started writing your memoir or you’ve gotten stuck somewhere in the process, this class is for you.

All the best,
Sam Babiak
Program Director
