Letters from the Program Director: Write the Best Book You Possibly Can

Hello, writers!

This fall, we’re thinking about novel writing. Whether you’re gearing up for National Novel Writing Month, you’re just beginning a novel, or you’re making your way through the dreaded middle, “The Novelist’s Toolkit” Class Package has a class for you. Because no matter where you are in the process, if you’re hoping to write a novel readers will love, there are key tools and components you need to be thinking about.

On Saturday, October 1st, we’re kicking the class package off with openings, but even if you’re written far beyond your opening, you might find returning to the beginning is exactly what you need. In John Pipkin’s “Starting Your Novel: Creating an Opening in Dialogue with Your Ending” you’ll not only learn how to successfully kick off your novel writing journey, but you’ll also get to explore how your opening can inform the rest of your book.

The next two classes, taught by Stacey Swann and Chaitali Sen respectively, will hone in on two craft topics central to novel writing – structure and pacing. Getting through hundreds of pages as writer (and as a reader) is not an easy thing to do. When it comes to structure, it’s easy to get lost and sometimes, writers can’t find their way back. As for pacing, it can make or break a story for a reader. If your plot is meandering or slow-moving when it doesn’t need to be, getting someone to sit down and read your book is that much harder. These two classes will help you nail your novel’s structure and pacing, which will only help you write the best book possible.

Lastly, we’ll finish with Gabino Iglesias’s “The Longest Mile: Finishing, Polishing, and Publishing Your Novel” to help you get to the end and achieve your writing and publishing goals. On top of all this, “the Novelist’s Toolkit” Class Package also comes with an exclusive meet-up, where you’ll get the chance to meet everyone who’s on this journey with you.

Don’t miss this opportunity to take your novel writing to the next level. Registration closes this Friday, September 30th at 5:00 pm CDT.

All the best,
Sam Babiak
