Meet the Board Members: Mia Zozobrado

“Everyone deserves to have a book where their identity (including the challenges and joys of said identity) represented...“

— Mia Zozobrado

A member of the Writers’ League since 2017, Mia lives in Austin, TX.

Scribe: Welcome, writer! Tell us — what do you write?

Mia Zozobrado: Hi hello! I’m currently the president of the Board of Directors, and the chair of the DEIA committee for WLT. I’m a full-time and freelance content writer, so I’m usually writing for work. However, my passions are writing short stories from the world of my homebrew Dungeons and Dragons campaign! I write personal essays as well and would love to work toward a YA fiction novel (something in the queer lit genre, with perhaps some horror and magical realism included).

Scribe: How did you come to join the WLT?

MZ: John Pipkin introduced me to the League in 2017 and I applied to be an intern. Formally joined after graduating and was invited to the Board of Directors in 2018!

Scribe: If you could choose one author to blurb your book, who would it be, and what would you want it to say?

MZ: I love this question, and it’s really hard to pick. For the yet-to-be-written YA fiction I’d love to work on, it’d be an absolute honor to have Mason Deaver blurb the book. I hope they’d say that the story is an honest telling of the trans/queer experience with horror (and hopefully humor) sprinkled throughout.

Scribe: You have one book you’re allowed to push onto all of your friends, and they’re forced to read it to remain your friend — which one would you choose?

MZ: Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender. The book’s MC is a trans person of color and is ultimately about intersectional identities and trans joy—both of which are incredibly important to me and close to my heart. Everyone deserves to have a book where their identity (including the challenges and joys of said identity) represented, and this is mine.

Scribe: What made you join the board?

MZ: Writing has always been a passion, but I felt disconnected from it after college. Supporting WLT felt like an avenue to reconnect with that part of myself. It’s so rewarding to see the League change and grow, and to be connected to such a joy-focused and supportive network of people. I love it here, and I wouldn’t trade my time with the League for anything.

Scribe: Here at the WLT, we love sharing book recommendations. What’s one book that has come out within the past few years that you couldn’t put down? (Bonus points if the book is Texas related!)

MZ: I haven’t finished it yet but I’m enjoying Mason Deaver’s The Ghosts We Keep!
