Scribe: In what genre(s) do you write?
Cara Skinner: I have only written one book which is historical fiction. Since I love history, I probably will continue to write in this genre.
Scribe: What authors would you like to have coffee or a beer with and which beverage?
CS: I would like to have a beer with Stephen King and ask him where he gets his ideas for his books. The Shining scared me to death! I also would like to have coffee with Bill O’Reilly. His recent series of books are very entertaining and informative. I wish I could have met James Michener. I learned so much from his historical fiction books, and I loved his characters. I also wish I could have met Margaret Mitchell, the author of Gone with the Wind.
Scribe: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what book would you want to have with you to keep you sane?
CS: I think I would need two books to keep me sane if I were stranded on a deserted island: The Bible and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I’m also a big J.R.R. Tolkien fan.
Scribe: What have you learned from your association with the Writers’ League?
CS: Since I have only recently joined the organization and live in Baytown, I haven’t yet had an opportunity to take advantage of any of the courses. I hope to have the opportunity to participate in any future seminars presented in Houston and maybe attend some of the courses presented at ACC in Austin. I do greatly appreciate the opportunity you all have given me to sell my book at the Texas Book Festival.
Scribe: Where do you see your writing taking you (or you taking it) in the future?
CS: I want to write more historical fiction books for teens and young adults. As a teacher, I have found that kids are more interested in history when it is presented as a story.
Scribe: Is there anything else about you that you would like to share with the world? An opportunity for blatant self-promotion!
CS: I love history, especially Texas history. I hope everyone will read General Houston’s Little Spy and enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
