Larry Dowell has been a member of the Writers’ League for 13 years and is attending the 2015 Agents & Editors Conference in June. He lives in Austin, TX.
Scribe: In what genre(s) do you write?
Larry Dowell: Historical Fiction, Poetry, and Motivational.
Scribe: What authors would you like to have coffee or a beer with and which beverage?
LD: I would love to have a cup of tea or glass of wine with Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac and Maya Angelou.
Scribe: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what book would you want to have with you to keep you sane?
LD: If it had to be only a single book, something like Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations would maintain the connections to many writers and thinkers. The best thoughts and words of many writers would be better than just one author and one book. My interests are too wide-ranging to be satisfied with a single writer or way of thinking.
Scribe: What have you learned from your association with the Writers’ League?
LD: The writing and publishing world is an ever evolving entity. Regarding the Writers’ League, it is truly a writers support group. I appreciate that in the Writers’ League, ego and self-service rarely get in the way of helping fellow writers. Also, the Agents & Editors Conference is an extraordinary opportunity for writers to learn from the pros and to interact with them in ways not otherwise possible.
Scribe: Where do you see your writing taking you (or you taking it) in the future?
LD: I started writing as a child for my own satisfaction and have continued to write in various forms for various purposes since then. I’ve written prose, poetry, plays, marketing material, teaching material, etc. I would like to see my writing reach a much wider audience.
Scribe: Is there anything else about you that you would like to share with the world? An opportunity for blatant self-promotion!
LD: In addition to being a writer, I am an illustrator, artist, graphic designer, web designer/developer, book designer, teaching artist, etc. My paintings have won regional juried awards. My graphic design work has won regional and national ADDY awards and my web design work has won international awards.
