Meet the Members: Calais Zagarow

I love writing about feelings and I hope to continue writing for both personal expression, as well as to help people feel less alone in their own emotions and experiences.

A member of the Writers’ League since 2024, Calais lives in the Austin, TX area.

Scribe: Welcome, writer! Tell us — what do you write?

Calais Zagarow: I am a first time author, having just debuted my memoir A Life In Between with Parea Books. I love writing about feelings and I hope to continue writing for both personal expression, as well as to help people feel less alone in their own emotions and experiences.

Scribe: If you could choose one author to blurb your book, who would it be, and what would you want it to say?

CZ: Joan Didion, may she rest in peace. I’d want her to acknowledge the raw feeling and vulnerability that I express in my writing, and the lyricism with which I do so, as these are things that I learned from her, the GOAT.

Scribe: You have one book you’re allowed to push onto all of your friends, and they’re forced to read it to remain your friend — which one would you choose?

CZ: Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe – It is by far the best work of non-fiction I’ve ever read. Not only does he bring the plot to life magically, but he does so with such compelling prose that you almost can’t believe the story is real. The topic of the book is essential, but the writing… the writing!!! Is even more so.

Scribe: Tell us your WLT story.

CZ: I learned about WLT from the Read Write Austin community, which I stumbled upon on Instagram while looking for inspiration on how to galvanize support for my first book locally in town.

Scribe: Where do you see your writing taking you (or you taking it) in the future?

CZ: Hard to say! I’d love to make a thing of it, but am very proud of my corporate career and not sure that I could do the writing-a-book-while-working-full-time thing again, especially now that I have a daughter. We’ll see!

Scribe: Here at the WLT, we love sharing book recommendations. What’s one book that has come out within the past few years that you couldn’t put down? (Bonus points if the book is Texas related!)

CZ: Big Swiss by Jen Beagin.

Scribe: Is there anything else about you that you would like to share with the world? An opportunity for blatant self-promotion!

CZ: Just that it would mean so, so much to me to have support from my fellow Texas authors as I embark on the wild journey of putting my first book out into the universe.

Scribe: Let us know any social media handles you have!

CZ: @cz.schroeder on Instagram
