Meet the Members: Carol Morgan Milberger

“I may have described the ability to write compelling dialogue as “witchcraft.” With a little effort and practice, I realized no magic is required.”

Scribe: Welcome, writer! Tell us — what do you write?

Carol Morgan Milberger: Nonfiction essays, my memoir: MOLDed: A Memoir of Loss & Resilience, and historical fiction.

Scribe: If you could choose one author to blurb your book, who would it be, and what would you want it to say?

CMM: Since I’m wishing, I’d love to imagine Lisa Genova describing MOLDed as “a suspenseful account of an unbelievable true story…funny and sad, yet informative…couldn’t put it down.”

Scribe: You have one book you’re allowed to push onto all of your friends, and they’re forced to read it to remain your friend — which one would you choose?

CMM: Too difficult to choose one, but a must-read is Liar’s Club, by Mary Karr; best craft book is Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott.

Scribe: Tell us your WLT story.

CMM: One strong WLT memory was the conclusion of my first week-long intensive memoir session with Rachel Starnes. It was a wonderful class–I learned so much but needed to know more. I may have described the ability to write compelling dialogue as “witchcraft.” With a little effort and practice, I realized no magic is required.

Scribe: Where do you see your writing taking you (or you taking it) in the future?

CMM: To continue writing essays on questions/topics that interest me as well as finish the historical fiction I began last year.

Scribe: Here at the WLT, we love sharing book recommendations. What’s one book that has come out within the past few years that you couldn’t put down? (Bonus points if the book is Texas related!)

CMM: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.

Scribe: Is there anything else about you that you would like to share with the world? An opportunity for blatant self-promotion!

CMM: Check out my memoir, MOLDed, on Amazon! An overnight explosion of toxic mold forces a family from stability into a suspenseful real-life horror story filled with loss, dark humor, and resilience.

An invisible explosion of toxic mold fractures every aspect of a family’s once-stable existence. MOLDed chronicles a mom’s surreal two-year odyssey of loss, anxiety, and absurdity in a lonely and desperate effort to protect her family’s health and fight an unseen enemy destroying their home.
