Scribe: Welcome, writer! Tell us — what do you write?
Ellen Bravo: Fiction and non-fiction.
Scribe: If you could choose one author to blurb your book, who would it be, and what would you want it to say?
EB: Ruth Ozeki: “I loved this book – a powerful story beautifully told with complexity, warmth and humor.”
Scribe: You have one book you’re allowed to push onto all of your friends, and they’re forced to read it to remain your friend — which one would you choose?
EB: Alice Childress, Like One of the Family. These very short stories introduce a domestic worker named Mildred who makes abundantly clear why she is NOT “one of the family.” The author writes with a sharp eye and even sharper tongue.
Scribe: Tell us your WLT story.
EB: I’m a recent transplant to Austin. A new friend who read my novels told me about WLT and the Agents and Editors Conference.
Scribe: Where do you see your writing taking you (or you taking it) in the future?
EB: I see my writing taking me to bookstores, book clubs, new friends and new stories to share.
Scribe: Here at the WLT, we love sharing book recommendations. What’s one book that has come out within the past few years that you couldn’t put down? (Bonus points if the book is Texas related!)
EB: The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride.
Scribe: Is there anything else about you that you would like to share with the world? An opportunity for blatant self-promotion!
EB: I started writing novels after success with three non-fiction books about working women. My first published fiction, Again and Again (SheWritesPress, 2015,) involved date rape and politics. Standing Up (Hard Ball Press, 2022,) which I wrote with my husband, is about love and organizing. I have a new novel in search of an agent, inspired by events in my life as the only woman and only non-Greek in a group resisting the military dictatorship in Greece in the late 60s.
