Scribe: Welcome, writer! Tell us — what do you write?
Engracia Gill: I am writing a memoir.
Scribe: If you could choose one author to blurb your book, who would it be, and what would you want it to say?
EG: It would be Immaculée Illibigaza, the author of Left to Tell: This story illuminates our shared human power to transform pain and trauma into a journey of healing and love.’
Scribe: You have one book you’re allowed to push onto all of your friends, and they’re forced to read it to remain your friend — which one would you choose?
EG: The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.
Scribe: Tell us your WLT story.
EG: I took a memoir writing class in April. I was hooked!
Scribe: Where do you see your writing taking you (or you taking it) in the future?
EG: I have 36 chapters written of my memoir. I am hoping to finish by the year’s end. I am writing blogs and professional articles as well.
Scribe: Here at the WLT, we love sharing book recommendations. What’s one book that has come out within the past few years that you couldn’t put down? (Bonus points if the book is Texas related!)
EG: ‘L’eau des Fleurs by Valérie Perin
Scribe: Is there anything else about you that you would like to share with the world? An opportunity for blatant self-promotion!
EG: I saddled 2 continents growing up, Europe and Africa. I was born in the Belgian Congo during colonialism. I lived in Belgium part of the time then went back to the Congo. At 18 y.o., I met some American hippies in Kinshasa. I then knew I needed to come to the U.S. Out of Africa, I landed in Gainesville, FL. And the rest is in my memoir (haha)! I have an MBA and an MSSW both from UT. I have had a private practice for the last 20 years. I adore my profession and I love to write.
