This prompt comes from WLT Instructor, Antonio Ruiz-Camacho, who will be teaching the class “Opening Pages in Fiction” on Saturday, May 7.
“Flannery O’Connor’s short story ‘A Good Man Is Hard to Find’ has one of the strongest openings I’ve ever read. Let’s use the first sentence of O’Connor’s breathtaking opening as a jumping-off board to write our own strong opening.
“The opening line is ‘The grandmother didn’t want to go to Florida.’ Why didn’t she want to go to Florida? What was she afraid of? What was she hiding? Write the opening paragraph of a new story exploring the grandmother’s motivations.“
