Wednesday Writing Prompt

PostSecret Reality

“The Universe story is the quintessence of reality. We perceive the story. We put it in our language, the birds put it in theirs, and the trees put it in theirs. We can read the story of the Universe in the trees. Everything tells the story of the Universe. The winds tell the story, literally, not just imaginatively. The story has its imprint everywhere, and that is why it is so important to know the story. If you do not know the story, in a sense you do not know yourself; you do not know anything.”  — Thomas Berry

We all have our secret realities.  Don’t believe me?  Just take a gander through the genius that is PostSecret!  Sometimes we are afraid to admit our alternate realities, if even just to ourselves.  But as writers, what amazing character development our secrets can be.  Not daring enough to sign your name to the secret?  Make it part of a characters’ truth!

This week take yourself on an artist date.  That is right, I called you an artist and said to take yourself on a date.  Go postcard shopping!  When you get home, make your postsecret and let that secret guide you into a short story or poem.  This week requires you, as the writer, to get physical with your work.  Be daring, and have fun.

Thank you to PostSecret, Thomas Berry, and a fellow MFA poetry candidate for helping to inspire this Wednesday writing prompt.

And if you are brave enough, please share!
