Colloquialisms
One way to set your writing apart is the use of colloquialisms. In the narrative voice, colloquialism can set the tone of your piece and provide nuance to the setting. The use of colloquialism in dialogue can bolster character description and add humor. Colloquialism has been a part of writing since fiction became popular. The origin can be traced back to the 16th century.
Write a short vignette that includes colloquialism either in the descriptive portion or the dialogue of the piece. Take that scene, put it in another setting, and use a different colloquial terminology to rewrite the piece from other perspectives. You will see how colloquialism can transform your writing.
Y’all have fun with that.
