Letters from the Program Director: More than Memory

Hello, writers!

We all know the foundation of memoir writing lies in our memories, but it’s not enough to simply write everything out as we remember it if we want to create truly compelling memoirs. A lot of work has to be done in order to create meaning out of our experiences. To accomplish this, most memoirists need to conduct research to help fill in the holes in their memories, to provide the cultural, social, or historical context surrounding their work, in order to ultimately widen the scope of what readers might take away from the story of their life. But the research process and subsequently the process of incorporating that research into a narrative isn’t always intuitive.

That’s why we’re excited to be offering the class “More than Memory: Using Research to Enhance Your Memoir” with Ursula Pike on Saturday, December 3rd. If you’re writing from memories and want to better understand how research might enhance your work, this class is for you.

All the best,
Sam Babiak
Program Director
